How Moving Regulations Change With Long Distance Movers

Long distance moving

Long-distance moves also known as interstate moves typically involve moving across state lines.  There are several differences between a local move and moving to another state that can present certain challenges.

In this blog, we’ll cover some regulations on the Federal level that will help you prepare for your cross-country move.

Differences Between Local and Long Distance Moves

The difference between a local move and a long-distance move is fairly obvious and includes longer periods of time on the road as well as more risk on the part of the moving company.  Interstate movers should pad your cargo more carefully when traveling longer distances.  You'll need to be sure you have not packed anything that may melt, leak, or otherwise need care while in transit.  See our list of, "What Not to Pack" here.

The other differences that are not obvious are a variety of federal regulations that apply to cross-country movers.  The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration publishes a small publication titled, “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move.” This booklet must be provided to any customers hiring long-distance movers.

Other Government Regulations for Long Distance Movers

Use the following steps to determine if your cross-country movers are qualified to transfer your belongings across state lines:

  • They have sufficient insurance – Long-distance moving companies are required to hold BIPD as well as Cargo Insurance Policies at a minimum when performing interstate moves.
  • Active registration with the FMCSA – Ensure the movers you choose are registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to transport your belongings across state lines. This registration must be updated by all moving companies every two years.  Our registration number is 3647953, Docket number MC 012562.
  • They have a US DOT number – The US Department of Transportation assigns a DOT number to cross-country movers that meet certain financial and safety standards. The DOT will also heavily scrutinize a company’s service record to ensure they are not taking advantage of consumers.

Partner with a United Moving Agent

By choosing long-distance movers that are affiliated with a large van line like United you can ensure that not only will your belongings be protected but that a larger organization will stand behind you if any problems arise during a cross-country move.  At Capitol Relocation & Logistics, we’ve been a United Van Lines Agent for decades and are proud of our track record with this wonderful organization.

Our US DOT number is 77949 with United Van Lines.  If you have any other questions about moving across state lines, do not hesitate to contact us today at (860) 415-4400 or through our online contact form.
