How Best To Protect Your Floors On Moving Day

Tips for Protecting Your Floors When Moving

The floors of your old home and your new home are under the threat of damage when the day to move finally swings around. Large items of furniture will be shifted, and there’s always the threat of something heavy being dropped and damaging the floor.

There’s going to be a lot of people coming in and out of your home, and a great deal of moving about. This will drag a lot of dirt in and could leave your floor looking filthy once everything has been cleared.

Having to clean all the floors of your home on Moving Day is not another job that you’ll want to add to your list. Here are some tips that will show you how best to protect your floors when you move!

Have Your Floor Coverings Prepared

If there’s a certain network of ‘paths’ commonly used throughout your home, then you can cover them to minimize the amount of dirt that’s dragged in and the potential for scrapes and scratches.

Newspaper is ideal as it can simply be thrown away at the end of the day, but you can also use:

  • Plastic maps
  • Tarpaulins
  • Rugs
  • Doormats
  • Old, heavy blankets
  • And towels

If you plan on using old towels or blankets, make sure they are not ones you wanted to keep. Movers will be walking all over them for hours and they will not be in good condition by the end of the day.

Cover Your Furniture’s Legs With Felt Pads

The feet of your furniture is the number one cause of floor damage on Moving Day. You can buy furniture pads that you simply affix onto the feet of your furniture (and anything else that is heavy) to prevent them from scratching the floor when they are moved.

Get Your Floor Sparkly Clean

On the day that you move, your first task should be to clean the floor. It only takes a single piece of grit to adhere itself to a boot or shoes to become a potential floor-scratcher.

The less chance of this happening the better, so get to scrubbing! Once you are satisfied that your floor could not possibly be any cleaner, then you can lay down your floor coverings as mentioned in the first tip given above.
