Checklist For Right After You Move Into A New Home

Have you recently moved into a new home and find yourself unsure of what to do next? If so, you need a plan to ensure that you can focus on getting your new home in order, while also giving yourself a chance to relax and adjust to all of the changes in your life. At Capitol Relocation & Logistics, we thought it would be a good idea to put together a quick checklist of things to tackle as soon as possible after you move into your new home.

Checklist to Tackle ASAP After Moving into a New Home

  1. Ensure Your Utilities Are Connected – This should likely be done before moving day, but ensure that all of your utilities were properly connected as soon as possible after moving into your new home. The last thing you want to have to do is unpack in the dark, or go to sleep the first night in your new home without heat or air conditioning.
  2. Check Your Possessions – Be sure to take a quick peak at as many boxes as possible to determine if any items were damaged during your move. You’ll want to compare your items to the detailed inventory list that you should have received from your moving company. If you find any items missing, or any damaged items, be sure to contact the moving company as soon as possible.
  3. Unpack Your Essentials – It’s obviously impossible to unpack all of your belongings at one time. Do your best to unpack only what you need for the first few days in your new home. It’s always a good idea to dedicate one box to hold all of your essentials such as your linens and toiletries so that you won’t have to spend hours digging through box after box looking for something like your toothbrush.
  4. Inspect Your New Home – Before moving all of your items into your new home, it’s always best to perform a pre-inspection. This way you can take note of any pre-existing damage to walls, floors and other areas within your new home before your moving company begins to deliver your belongings. Other items to locate include your circuit breaker or fuse box, main water valve, and any individual shut off valves that you may have underneath sinks and appliances.
  5. Change Your Mailing Address – This is another task that should have been handled prior to moving day, but be sure that you filled out a change of address form at your post office so that your mail will be routed to your new home. You may also want to check with utility companies as well as any other banks and companies who may still have your old address.
